Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 877 (December 27, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant First Class Wilton W. Andrews (ASN: US-53005050), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company H, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 21 August 1951 in the vicinity of Tumil-li, Korea. On this date elements of Company H were supporting an attack by friendly Korean troops against vital enemy-held positions. When the attack was halted by intense hostile fire, Sergeant Andrews, 75-mm. recoilless rifle section sergeant, immediately directed his men in taking exposed positions from which to employ effective fire upon the enemy force. His direction of accurate fire soon drew an intense hostile counter-fire which destroyed the sight of a recoilless rifle. Realizing the importance of the weapon’s fire and disregarding the danger to himself, Sergeant Andrews braved the enemy fire and crossed the hazardous terrain to obtain another sight. His initiative and selfless devotion to duty were instrumental in eliminating several hostile emplacements and enabled the friendly assaulting troops to secure their objective with a minimum of casualties. The gallantry in action displayed by Sergeant Andrews on this occasion reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
