The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Frederick H. Alvey (ASN: 0-978658), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company H [then Company E], 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 26 August 1951 in the vicinity of Pumil-li, Korea. On this date Company E was given the mission of securing vital positions along hill mass 983-940 which were defended by a numerically superior enemy force. As Lieutenant Alvey’s platoon neared the objective it was subjected to intense hostile mortar and automatic weapons fire, forcing it to withdraw to more tenable positions. In the course of this action, Lieutenant Alvey received a painful wound, but refused to be evacuated and directed his men in their withdrawal. In a subsequent attack he skillfully led his men in overcoming all obstacles and securing the objective. The determined hostile force immediately launched a fierce counterattack. Although weakened by his wound, Lieutenant Alvey, with complete disregard for personal safety, continued to direct accurate and effective fire upon the advancing enemy until ordered by his superior to leave for medical treatment. His outstanding leadership and selfless devotion to duty were an inspiration to his men and aided immeasurably in the success of the friendly unit in this engagement. His valor was outstanding in the field of battle where bravery was common and is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service.
