The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Gregory S. Abarr (ASN: US-54644401), United States Army, for gallantry in action against an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Private First Class Abarr distinguished himself by intrepid actions on 9 June 1968 while serving with Company B, 1st Battalion, 46th Infantry Regiment, 198th Infantry Brigade. On that date, the company was engaged on a combat operation in the western section of the Tam Ky Province when it made contact with an enemy force of undetermined size. Hurling hand grenades at a mortar position near the lead element, the insurgents mortally wounded three of the mortarmen. With complete disregard for his own safety, Private First Class Abarr maneuvered through the hostile fire to the insurgents’ position. Laying down an intensive barrage of suppressive fire, he quickly silenced the enemy position. While maneuvering back to his platoon, he spotted and killed two insurgents trying to out-flank the company’s position. Moving back to the perimeter, he took charge of setting up the flank security. While he was directing the placement of his men, an insurgent began firing on his position. Pinpointing the hostile position, he placed heavy volumes of suppressive fire into the area, silencing the insurgent. Continuing to expose himself to the heavy enemy fire, he moved up and down the flanks, directing his men’s fire and aiding the wounded. His timely actions contributed greatly to the successful completion of the mission and subsequent defeat of the enemy. Private First Class Abarr’s personal heroism, professional competence, and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
