The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Bronze Star Medal with Combat “V” to First Lieutenant (Field Artillery) Richard D. Abare (ASN: 0-1688558), United States Army, for heroic achievement as a member of Battery C, 15th Field Artillery Battalion, 2d Infantry Division, in action on 17 September 1951 in the vicinity of Samtae-dong, Korea. On this date, as friendly units advanced to the base of an enemy-held hill, all artillery fire directed on the objective was lifted and a machine gun was installed at the observation point to provide covering fire. During the ensuing action, intense enemy sniper and machine gun fire were directed upon the friendly machine gun crew, forcing them to withdraw from their positions. Observing this, Lieutenant Abare, with utter disregard for his own safety, operated the machine gun and employed a heavy base of fire along the ridge line. His accurate and effective fire silenced the enemy machine gun and greatly diminished the sniper fire. When his weapon failed to function, Lieutenant Abare continued his action with a rifle until friendly units had secured their objective. The heroism in action displayed by Lieutenant Abare on this occasion reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
