The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Warrant Officer (W-1) James A. U’Ren, United States Army, for gallantry in action in connection with military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force while serving with the 235th Aviation Company (Surveillance Airplane), 1st Aviation Brigade, in the Republic of Vietnam on 25 September 1969. Warrant Officer U’Ren distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as aircraft commander in the wing aircraft of a light fire team of AH-1G helicopters in Chau Duc Province. When he observed over 100 enemy troops advancing on line out of a tree line towards the national boundary, he immediately joined in the attack on the advancing enemy. As soon as the Viet Cong sighted the fire team, they commenced rapid automatic fire at both aircraft. During the first target attack, both aircraft experienced partial armament systems failures, leaving the fire team without defensive weapons. In spite of this, Warrant Officer U’Ren gallantly pressed the attack on the enemy unit, slowing and confusing its advance with accurate rocket fire. He made the maximum effect with his aircraft’s limited ordnance. The enemy continued to put up a heavy but steadily diminishing volume of fire until it finally ceased. A subsequent ground sweep of the area revealed 156 enemy dead. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
