Brigadier General Sebree’s Division was charged with the responsibility of establishing and holding a strategic bridgehead across the Matanikau River. Japanese mortar fire had killed many commissioned and non-commissioned officers, and it appeared the effort would be jeopardized for lack of leadership. Brigadier General Sebree plunged into the front lines, taking personal command of the troops, and securing the bridgehead. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Brigadier General Sebree, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
