The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Distinguished Service Medal to General Jacob Loucks Devers (ASN: 0-2599), United States Army, for exceptionally meritorious and distinguished service in a position of great responsibility to the Government of the United States from 29 October 1944 to 1 January 1945, as Commanding General, SIXTH U.S. Army Group. During this period General Devers coordinated with the U.S. Navy in the solving of many and diverse problems relative to the build-up following the invasion of the south coast of France. General Devers with foresight and keen planning ability was in a large part responsible for the success of these joint operations. His outstanding tact, sound judgment and alert cooperation in dealing with the many complex problems common to an amphibious operation assured the wholehearted cooperation of the two services. The leadership and professional skill displayed by General Devers are in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Armed Services.
