Department of the Army, General Orders No. 41 (November 5, 1959)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Sergeant Charles C. Anderson, United States Army, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy as a member of Sharpe General Depot, at Stockton, California on 11 August 1959. Upon being informed that two young boys were drowning in the channel of the turning basin of the Port of Stockton, Sergeant Anderson immediately ran to the scene to rescue them. Without hesitation or concern for his own personal safety, and being completely unfamiliar with the tidal currents, depths and possible undertows, he swam approximately 150 yards to reach the victims. Sergeant Anderson managed to keep the two boys afloat until the older child regained sufficient strength to swim to shore with his assistance while he brought the younger one to a point where help was waiting. Sergeant Anderson’s determined efforts, presence of mind and prompt, courageous actions saved the boy from certain death by drowning and reflect the utmost credit upon himself and the military service.
