The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, 20 July 1942, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Sergeant First Class James D. Farmer, United States Army, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy as a member of Headquarters Company, 3d Battalion, United States Army Engineer Center Regiment, on 6 May 1959. Sergeant Farmer was traveling by automobile in the vicinity of Lincolnia, Fairfax County, Virginia, when he came upon the scene of an accident. After a serious collision a truck had rolled down a steep incline approximately 20 feet below the road surface and landed upside down in a stream. Without hesitation or concern for his own personal safety, Sergeant Farmer volunteered his efforts to rescue two small girls trapped in the wrecked vehicle. Despite flames which had enveloped the truck and the grave danger of a possible gasoline explosion. Sergeant Farmer, in the company of two other men who arrived at the scene, approached the truck, evacuated one of the victims and returned and rescued the second girl. His brave courage, prompt initiative, and unselfish actions saved the children’s lives, and reflect the utmost credit upon himself and the military service.
