Department of the Army, General Orders No. 10 (March 13, 1959)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Private First Class Gary D. Osterhout, United States Army, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy as a member of Company A, 34th Signal Battalion Corps, at Ludwigsburg, Germany on 19 May 1958. Upon observing a German national leap from a bridge into the Neckar River, Private Osterhout, without hesitation or concern for his own personal safety and being completely unfamiliar with the currents, depths and possible undercurrents, swam approximately 50 yards to rescue the victim. He managed to overcome the resistance exerted by the drowning man and, in quickly approaching darkness, pulled him onto the shore. Immediately upon resting he relieved a fellow soldier and administered artificial respiration until the man was revived. The prompt and effective action taken by Private Osterhout in the midst of a confused and nervous crowd, and the courageous and selfless risk of his own life in this situation saved the man from drowning, and reflect distinct credit upon himself and the military service.
