The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Master Sergeant David K. Broad, United States Army, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy as a member of Company D, 65th Engineer Battalion (Infantry Division), in Laie Oahu, Territory of Hawaii on 7 June 1958. While parking his automobile, Sergeant Broad notice flames coming from the vicinity of the kitchen of the neighbor’s house approximately 500 yards from his own dwelling and drove immediately to the burning house to investigate. Upon peering through a dense blanket of smoke, he noticed two or more small forms on the floor. He attempted to open the door and discovered that it was locked from the inside. Without hesitation and with complete disregard for his own personal safety, he broke open the locked door of the building and, despite the risk of being trapped and burned to death, delivered five sleeping children who were located in various rooms of the house to safety. Sergeant Broad’s decisive action and exceptional courage in the face of grave danger undoubtedly saved the lives of these children, reflecting the most credit upon himself and the military service.
