Department of the Army, General Orders No. 46 (October 11, 1949)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Captain (Infantry) George F. Charlton, United States Army, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy as a member of the Tactical Department, The Infantry School, Fort Benning, Georgia, on 26 June 1949. At the peril of his life, he rescued an officer of the United States Army from drowning in the Atlantic Ocean in the vicinity of Ormond Beach, Florida. The heroism of this act was emphasized by Captain Charlton’s deliberate disregard for personal safety. Although he realized the presence of a strong ebb tide and a viciously dangerous undertow and was not sure of his swimming ability, inasmuch as he had done no swimming for more than five years, Captain Charlton nevertheless plunged into the hazardous waters, swam to the helpless officer, and brought him back to safety. His brave act of selfless courage reflects great credit upon himself and is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service.
