Department of the Army, General Orders No. 36 (August 4, 1959)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Lieutenant Colonel [then First Lieutenant] Clifford A. Sheldon, United States Army, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy on 22 February 1943, at Lisbon, Portugal. When the airplane in which he was a passenger crashed in the harbor and broke in two, he forced his way through a window and, although injured in the crash, helped two others to escape. He then pulled a seriously injured woman onto the sinking airplane. Colonel Sheldon’s courageous acts were highly commendable.
