(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to Colonel (Infantry) Paul Thomas Carroll, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving as Commanding Officer of the 10th Infantry Regiment, 5th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in the European Theater of Operations, in 1944 and 1945. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Colonel Carroll, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Colonel (Infantry) Paul Thomas Carroll, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving as Commanding Officer of the 2d Infantry Regiment, 5th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy from 20 – 24 September 1944, near Pournoy-La-Chetive, France. Lieutenant Colonel Carroll directed capture and retention of the town. He went forward to encourage his men several times under intense enemy artillery, machine gun, and rifle fire and by his magnificent leadership succeeded in repulsing the enemy’s strong counter-attack and during the following three days succeeded in driving off four more of the enemy’s determined attacks. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Lieutenant Colonel Carroll, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
