    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, 20 July 1942, takes pleasure in presenting the Legion of Merit to Colonel (Coast Artillery Corps), [then Brigadier General Daniel W. Hickey, United States Army, for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States from December 1943 to March 1945. The singularly distinctive accomplishments of Colonel Hickey and his dedicated contributions in the service of his country reflect the highest credit upon himself and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Army. (This award supersedes the awards to Colonel Hickey of the Bronze Star Medal, for service from 10 December 1943 to 27 May 1944, as published in General Orders 62, Headquarters, Communications Zone, European Theater of Operations, 24 April 1945, and the Bronze Star Medal (first Oak Leaf Cluster), for service from 14 August 1944 to 5 March 1945, as published in General Orders 18, IX Air Defense Command, 9 May 1945.)
