Action Date:

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain Jimmie Dale Schuman, United States Air Force, for gallantry in action in connection with military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force while serving with the 20th Special Operations Squadron, Tuy Hoa Air Base, South Vietnam, in action near Tieu Atar, Republic of Vietnam, on 4 January 1971. On that date, while participating in aerial flight as an Aircraft Commander of a UH-1F Helicopter Gunship, Captain Schuman performed in such an outstanding manner that members of a friendly long range reconnaissance team were rescued. With complete disregard for his personal safety, Captain Schuman continually attacked heavily defended hostile positions despite intense anti-aircraft fire and poor visibility. By electing to draw fire and remain as close as possible to the beleaguered team under adverse condition, the probable massacre of the team and loss of the rescue helicopter were averted. By his gallantry and devotion to duty, Captain Schuman has reflected great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
