The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Corporal Joseph V. Dominelli (ASN: RA-13393985), United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with an enemy of the United States while serving with while serving with Company H, 2d Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division. On the morning of 19 March 1952, near Yangjichon, Korea, while on a routine inspection of the company’s communication wires, Corporal Dominelli, communication chief, was given the additional duties of supervising a ten man detail in the cutting of logs for the construction of bunkers. After directing the detail to the group of trees which were to be cut, Corporal Dominelli and an assistant proceeded to check the communication wires. Advancing only a few yards from the detail, Corporal Dominelli tripped over a trip wire attached to a fragmentation hand grenade which served as a booby trap. Realizing that the wire had pulled the pin to the grenade, that his assistant was standing directly over the hand grenade, and that the other men were in bursting radius of the grenade, Corporal Dominelli unhesitatingly endangered his personal safety as he ran to his assistant and, pushing him to the ground, seized the grenade and threw it down the hill where it exploded harmlessly. His quick thinking and courageous actions were instrumental in saving the life of his comrade and preventing possible injury to the ten man detail. Corporal Dominelli’s heroism reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
