The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Captain (Infantry) John Adam Bruckner, IV (ASN: 0-27622), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company A, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, distinguished himself by gallantry in action on 31 December 1951 in the vicinity of Kumhwa, Korea. On this date Company A was occupying defensive positions which were under direct observation of hostile forces. The well entrenched enemy continually directed a deadly hail of mortar fire, preventing the movement of friendly soldiers to improve their positions. Realizing that the enemy fire was placing the entire defenses in jeopardy, Captain Bruckner repeatedly exposed himself in order to direct a counter-fire and guide the efforts of his men. While moving along the entire front of his position, encouraging his men, Captain Bruckner was fatally wounded by enemy fire. His self-sacrificing devotion to duty and outstanding leadership aided immeasurably in the successful defense of the friendly unit’s positions. The gallantry in action displayed by Captain Bruckner was in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and will live forever in the hearts of his fellow men.
