The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to First Lieutenant (Field Artillery), [then Second Lieutenant] James C. Brownback (ASN: 0-1917694), United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with an enemy of the United States as a member of Headquarters, 12th Field Artillery Battalion, 2d Infantry Division, in action on 30 August 1952 in the vicinity of Torong-pi, Korea. On that date members of a company of the 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, accidentally entered an unmarked mine field while on a training problem, and detonated several of them. Lieutenant Brownback volunteered to direct a Helicopter to the location of the disaster for the purpose of evacuating the wounded. Upon reaching the vicinity of the mine field, Lieutenant Brownback alighted from the Helicopter, secured blood plasma and stretchers and made his way through the unmarked mine field. Upon reaching the proximity of the wounded men he directed the safe landing of two Helicopters on the treacherous terrain. Then with complete disregard for personal safety, Lieutenant Brownback moved about the mine field administering first aid to the wounded and aiding in their evacuation. As a result of his prompt and daring actions, the lives of several men were saved. Lieutenant Brownback’s outstanding performance of devotion to duty reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
