The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private Robert Lee Bonner (ASN: RA-15424291), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company I, 3d Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 19 December 1950 in the vicinity of Hungnam, Korea, Private Bonner was defending a sector of the defensive perimeter when a large enemy force attacked. He stayed with his recoilless rifle and fired round after round point blank at the advancing enemy. When the enemy by sheer weight of numbers overran his position, he, with complete disregard for his own personal safety, remained at his post, fought the enemy in hand-to-hand combat until he was mortally wounded. The gallantry of Private Bonner helped prevent a complete breakthrough of the company lines by the enemy and is in in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service.
