Headquarters, 25th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 207 (September 27, 1950)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal James I. Blankenship (Blankinship) (ASN: RA-33212581), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Heavy Mortar Company, 35th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On the night of 6 August 1950, near Chungam-ni, Korea, the infantry company with which Corporal Blankenship’s mortar team was serving was subjected to repeated banzai attacks. Taking up a position in the most forward area, Corporal Blankenship called down precision mortar fire on the attackers and at the same time joined the continuing firefight with his rifle. Often bringing mortar fire within 40 yards of the lines, he staved off successive attacks and inflicted heavy casualties among the enemy forces. He was wounded the following day while moving to a still better position from which to continue his work. Corporal Blankenship’s gallant determination and conspicuous military ability reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the United States Army.
