The Secretary of the Army of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Army Commendation Medal with Combat “V” to First Lieutenant Salvatore G. Sgambelluri, United States Army, for exceptionally valorous service during Operation ENDURING FREEDOM VII-IX. First Lieutenant Sgambelluri distinguished himself with extreme valor on 10 July 2008 in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM VII-IX. First Lieutenant Sgambelluri’s immediate reaction to an improvised explosive device striking a vehicle in his patrol saved the life of one of his soldiers. Disregarding his own safety, he attempted to save another soldier from the secondary effects of the attack when the vehicle’s ammunition ignited. His bravery and valorous actions reflect great credit on him, Task Force RIPCORD, Task Force CURRAHEE, and the United States Army.
