The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to First Lieutenant (Air Corps) Jack B. Pitts (ASN: 0-708192), United States Army Air Forces, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight against the enemy on 11 April 1945. While leading an armed reconnaissance mission over Germany, Lieutenant Pitts executed a daring dive-bombing attack upon a vital marshalling yard destroying ten box cards and two locomotives. Without regard for his personal safety, Lieutenant Pitts then strafed an enemy landing ground, executing repeated strafing passes in the face of concentrated anti-aircraft fire and destroyed two JU-88’s and one FW-190. Only when his fuel supply became dangerously low did Lieutenant Pitts discontinue his attacks and by his unusual aggressiveness, courage and superior flying skill he contributed in large measure to the success of this mission.
