The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain (Air Corps) Alfred W. Martin (ASN: 0-701779), United States Army Air Forces, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight against the enemy on 23 February 1945. Captain Martin was leading a flight of P-47 type aircraft on an armed reconnaissance in the vicinity of Saareburg, Germany, when he located an enemy train consisting of more than sixty flat cars carrying tanks and motor transport. Despite concentrated anti-aircraft fire from ground installations Captain Martin led his flight in an attack with telling effect and then led subsequent strafing attacks along the entire length of the train, causing the destruction of the locomotive, several tanks and vehicles and almost total destruction of the train. His aggressive leadership and devotion to duty on this occasion reflect the highest credit upon himself and his organization.
