Headquarters, U.S. Army Support Command, DaNang, General Orders No. 132 (March 2, 1971)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Executive Order 11046, 24 August 1962, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Bronze Star Medal with Combat “V” to Specialist Fifth Class Stuart A. Steinberg, United States Army, for heroism, not involving participation in aerial flight, in connection with military operations against a hostile force. Specialist Fifth Class Steinberg distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 24 January 1970, while serving as an Explosive Ordnance Disposal Specialist at Fire Support Base DAVIS, Republic of Vietnam. His mission was to render safe and dispose of all hazardous explosive ordnance found. While employing professional expertise and rapidly completing his precarious assignment, he noticed a North Vietnamese Regular pulling a long piece of commo wire that was attached to a 155-mm. projectile. Completely aware of the North Vietnamese Army’s attempt to initiate the improvised mine, Specialist Steinberg ran to the wire, grabbed it, and cut it with his wire cutters. Upon closer observation of the mine, it was shown to be capable of destroying the two helicopters nearby, bringing harm or death to personnel in the area, and resulting in a serious setback in the operation. This type of complete disregard for one’s own personal safety for the benefit of the objective and the fellow members of his team, is truly in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
