The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Bruce F. Stutchbury (ASN: 32734494), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company K, 3d Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division. On 15 March 1945, when advance elements of his company were held up by hostile machine gun fire near Ormersvillers, France, Private First Class Stutchbury, on his own initiative, rushed and crawled forward until he reached an advantageous firing position, 300 yards from the enemy. Disregarding small arms fire that came so close that one round hit his first aid pouch, and artillery shells that burst 30 yards from him, he fired his BAR so intensely and accurately that after a 10-minute duel, he killed the 3-man crew, enabling his company to resume its advance. Private First Class Stutchbury was killed in a subsequent action. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
