James Turlington graduated from the Senior Medical School Program, Air Force Institute of Technology, Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, Texas, and was commissioned a Medical Officer in the U.S. Air Force, serving on active duty from 1970 to 1981. Recalled to active duty in 1991, he retired in 2005 as a U.S. Air Force Brigadier General.
