The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain Andrew C. Bauer (AFSN: 0-3117429), United States Air Force, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as a HC-123 Pilot near My Tho, Republic of Vietnam, on 1 April 1968. On that date, Captain Bauer flew his unarmed aircraft on a low-level defoliation mission against a heavily defended hostile rocket base and supply area. Despite extremely accurate ground fire which seriously damaged his aircraft, and which continued throughout the mission, Captain Bauer made two runs through the target area, placed the defoliant precisely as briefed, and by so doing, deprived hostile ground forces of vital jungle cover for their operations. The professional competence, aerial skill, and devotion to duty displayed by Captain Bauer reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
