The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Sergeant Sylvester Badgett (ASN: 18137318), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 92d Infantry Division, in action on 17 September 1944, in Italy. Sergeant Badgett was a member of a patrol, which was subjected to sudden enemy machine gun and machine pistol fire from a slope, as the patrol was advancing. Sergeant Badgett operating in front of the patrol, noticed a machine gun firing from the terrace above him. Moving to a position directly below the gun, he reached up and captured it by wrenching it from the hands of the enemy operator, In accomplishing this he fell to a lower terrace where he was hit by enemy fire. Sergeant Badgett’s supreme personal intrepidity and brave initiative in the execution of a highly dangerous act adds luster to the heroic examples of the American fighting man.
