The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) Thomas William Akins (ASN: 0-316554), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company F, 2d Battalion, 442d Regimental Combat Team, 92d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 23 April 1945, in Italy. An infantry company was assigned the mission of attacking and occupying the high ground around San Terenzo. The number of enemy troops and the character of the terrain presented a problem to the attacking elements. Realizing the gravity of the situation, Captain Akins personally led a reconnaissance group into enemy territory to determine an advantageous plan of attack. After his reconnaissance, he directed his company in a wide encircling movement to cut off the road leading out of town, thereby trapping the enemy inside. The enemy attempted to effect a withdrawal under cover of a smoke screen. Taking advantage of the smoke, Captain Akins sent one platoon into the town to break up the foe’s maneuver. As a result of his well-planned maneuver 115 enemy officers and enlisted men were captured. His outstanding leadership reflects great credit on the traditions of the Armed Forces.
