The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technical Sergeant Charles J. Ruma, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 12th Armored Division, in action against the enemy in France on 8 December 1944. With another enlisted man and an officer Technical Sergeant Ruma volunteered for a night patrol to establish communications with an isolated platoon. When an enemy grenade seriously wounded all three men, he carried the officer back to safety and had dragged an enlisted man halfway back when he himself collapsed from loss of blood. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
