The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Lieutenant Colonel (Cavalry) Montgomery Cunningham Meigs (ASN: 0-22930), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving as Commanding Officer of the 23d Tank Battalion, 12th Armored Division, in action during the period of 9 to 11 December 1944. Lieutenant Colonel Meigs’ actions during the three days’ operations under artillery, mortar and small arms fire set an example for all officers and men of his battalion, inspiring them to continue the attack on the Division objective, which was taken on 12 December 1944. Lieutenant Colonel Meigs’ courage and utter disregard for his own life in leading his battalion, exemplifies the finest traditions of the Armed Forces of the United States.
