The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Infantry), [then Sergeant] George W. Krumme (ASN: 0-2006372), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company G, 274th Infantry Regiment, 70th Infantry Division, on 6 January 1945. During the assault on Wingen, France, the enemy counterattacked Company G, 274th Infantry Regiment, on the front and left flank with such force that they were forced to withdraw. Without regard for his own personal safety, Second Lieutenant Krumme ran from a covered position, manned a machine gun, all the while being subjected to murderous enemy fire, to cover the withdrawal of the company. He later showed remarkable leadership in organizing for defense, the house in which the squad had taken cover, and in taking care of the wounded until relief arrived. His brae action was instrumental in enabling the company to reorganize, attack and capture the village.
