The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Staff Sergeant Clarence E. Jacobson (ASN: 39337481), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company D, 274th Infantry Regiment, 70th Infantry Division, in action on 20 February 1945. While reconnoitering for defensive positions on Spicheren Heights, France, Staff Sergeant Jacobson observed a company of enemy soldiers advancing cautiously, in wooded concealment, toward his company’s area. Skillfully avoiding observation, he worked his way back to his company with the information. In order to give his company time to prepare for the impending counterattack, he went forward alone to a vantage point and with intense rifle fire held up the enemy advance for 20 minutes, despite heavy counter fire. His gallant action enabled his company to repel the counterattack. In a subsequent action Staff Sergeant Jacobson was killed.
