The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Carl V. Widders (ASN: 19090876), United States Army, for gallantry in action on 2 October 1944, near ****, Holland. Corporal Widders, machine gunner, Headquarters Company, 3d Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82d Airborne Division, heroically and skillfully manned his weapon throughout an enemy assault against his position after receiving a serious chest wound. The enemy attacked through the flank he was defending and laid down heavy machine gun and mortar fire in which Corporal Widders was badly hit. He was ordered to withdraw, but refused to do so until all his comrades cleared the position. He kept a withering fire on the enemy until he collapsed from loss of blood. His high courage and outstanding performance beyond the call of duty prevented an enemy penetration and won the admiration and respect of his comrades. His action was in keeping with the high traditions of the Airborne Forces of the United States Army.
