The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Stanley Weinberg (ASN: 0-1307595), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company B, 1st Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82d Airborne Division, in action on 5 January 1945, near ****, Belgium. First Lieutenant Weinberg, Company Executive Officer, displayed great initiative, leadership and courage when he annihilated a battalion of Volks Grenadiers which was threatening the 1st Battalion flank. First Lieutenant Weinberg formed a group of sixty-seven enlisted men, many of whom were from Headquarters and Communications Sections, and were acting as riflemen for the first time. With this group and two medium tanks, First Lieutenant Weinberg checked the threat, by skillful deployment, inspirational leadership and undaunted courage. Though handicapped by lack of radio communications, he accomplished this difficult mission so successfully that one hundred enemy were killed and two hundred taken prisoner without one of his own men being seriously wounded. His gallantry is in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Airborne Forces.
