The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Francis S. Ubel (ASN: 36588540), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 1st Battalion, 517th Parachute Infantry Regiment, in action on 6 January 1945, near ****, Belgium. The 1st Battalion attacked and seized the nigh ground near ****, Belgium. The first objective was reached, cleared and organized after dark. At 0300 hours, 6 January 1945, the 1st Battalion position received heavy and sustained mortar and artillery fire followed by a fierce counterattack. Because of the freezing weather, the machine gun protecting the extreme right flank would not fire. The enemy quickly found this weak spot and directed its force against a breakthrough at this point. The Company Commander realizing what was happening, quickly called for another automatic weapon to be brought to this position. Private First Class Ubel, with complete disregard for the heavy concentration of enemy mortar and small arms fire hitting all around him, picked up his machine gun and ran with it from the left flank of the company’s position. Private First Class Ubel was struck by a piece of shrapnel causing a chest wound. He fell behind his gun and despite his painful wound, continued to man the gun until the enemy threat was completely repelled. His courageous action is primarily responsible for the holding of the battalion’s position. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
