The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Thomas A. Sturm (ASN: 35043902), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company F, 2d Battalion, 401st Glider Infantry Regiment, 82d Airborne Division, in action on 9 June 1944, in ****, France. When ammunition had run dangerously low in his company, Sergeant Sturm, with his empty Thompson Sub-Machine Gun voluntarily crawled back more than 300 yards through enemy-held territory to secure a re-supply. He was subjected to machine gun fire, but without a moment’s hesitation he charged the position and clubbed the two gunners to death. He then continued to the rear and brought back sufficient ammunition to enable his company to beat off the enemy counterattack. Sergeant Sturm demonstrated courage and initiative of the highest order in accomplishing this self-imposed mission. His conduct reflected high credit on himself and the Airborne Forces of the United States Army.
