The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Lawrence J. Stewart (ASN: 34876631), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 325th Glider Infantry Regiment, 82d Airborne Division, in action on 3 January 1945, in ******. Private First Class Stewart, when his platoon was momentarily pinned down, ran from one flank under heavy small arms fire to advance beside his platoon leader. Firing his BAR from the hip, he walked forward toward the heaviest fire and into a machine gun emplacement, firing furiously. He caused six Germans to surrender and killed others. Keeping up a continual fire and never stopping his advance, he walked upright beside his platoon leader throughout the attack and knocked out all resistance. Private First Class Stewart was wounded in the leg but kept on going until he was seen to fall under a shell burst. His courageous and inspiring conduct under fire exemplified the highest traditions of the Airborne Forces of the United States Army.
