The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Julius A. Silverman (ASN: 32906594), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company D, 307th Airborne Engineer Battalion, 82d Airborne Division, in action on 19 September 1944 in the town of ****, Holland. On that date, the 1st Platoon, of which Private Silverman was a member, was given the mission of establishing road blocks in the town of ****, Holland. The town as at this time occupied by the Germans. After bitter fighting, his platoon advanced some distance into the town before being pinned down by machine gun and other small arms fire from dug-in positions. Private Silverman, with complete disregard for his own personal safety, moved to within 50 yards of the enemy positions and fired on them with his bazooka. This caused the enemy to retreat and the platoon was able to advance and complete its mission. On another occasion his platoon was stopped by enemy machine gun fire. Private Silverman was wounded, but continued to advance and fire his bazooka. The platoon was able to advance and take the enemy position, capturing about 30 German prisoners. Private Silverman’s aggressiveness and devotion to duty was an inspiration to the other members of the platoon. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
