The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Clifford M. Scott (ASN: 37150477), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Service Company, 507th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82d Airborne Division, in action on 12 June 1944, near ****, France. Staff Sergeant Scott brought ammunition forward to an outpost position which was being attacked by a superior number of the enemy. While under mortar and small arms fire, he worked his way further forward to cover the withdrawal of the unit. He accounted for a considerable number of the enemy including one German officer. Although completely surrounded, he affected his own withdrawal and assumed command of a group of riflemen, which succeeded in consolidating a section of terrain under intense fire and held this position for several hours until ordered to withdraw. After evacuation from the village of ****, Staff Sergeant Scott subjected himself time and time again to possible enemy capture to assist in contacting friendly forces. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
