The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Melvin A. Moorhous, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving as a Medical Aidman with the 23d Infantry Division (Americal), in the Pacific Theater of Operations during World War II. Corporal Moorhous was attached to the leading rifle platoon during the attack on Japanese emplacements during the battle for Nip Gulch on an advanced Southwest Pacific base. While assaulting one of the enemy pillboxes a number of casualties were suffered. Corporal Moorhous made his way to the front line where, under heavy Japanese machine gun fire he worked along a 50-yard exposed front and assisted in caring for the wounded. Corporal Moorhous’ medical skill, resourcefulness and devotion to duty were decisive factors in saving the life of three seriously wounded soldiers. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
