The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) Harold E. Miller (ASN: 0-1293297), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company B, 1st Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82d Airborne Division, in action on 3 January 1945, near ****, Belgium. Captain Miller, Company Commander, displayed remarkable courage and ingenuity in attacking a strong pocket of enemy resistance protecting an enemy artillery observation post. While two platoons established a base of fire, Captain Miller personally led the remaining platoon through intense enemy fire, without the benefit of mortar or artillery support because of the proximity of friendly troops, and successfully attacked the enemy flank. The final assault on the enemy positions was viciously executed and forced the enemy group to surrender. As a result of this courageous action he eliminated all enemy action in this sector. Captain Miller’s dominant courage and ability in this action reflects great honor on the Airborne Forces of the United States Army.
