The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Edward J. McGrath (ASN: 33621874), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 680th Glider Field Artillery Battalion, 17th Airborne Division, in action against the enemy near Hammenkeln, Germany, on 24 March 1945. After landing by glider in enemy territory, Private First Class McGrath moved about over the landing field checking glider loads and equipment preparatory to his unit going into action. Ins o doing, he gave aid to wounded men and made several attempts to rescue a wounded officer laying in a position exposed to direct enemy fire. Only a direct order by a superior officer prevented him from risking his life in making another attempt. His action was inspiring and in accord with the military traditions of the United States.
