The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Harold L. Lewton (ASN: 36162012), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters Company, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82d Airborne Division, in action on 3 January 1945, near ****, Belgium. During the initial attack with the assault platoon advancing toward the Salm River, Corporal Lewton, with total disregard for personal safety, left the protective cover of a tank to knock out an enemy bazooka position that was firing on the lead tank. His heroic action enabled the attack to progress without loss of tank or crew. Corporal Lewton’s devotion to duty was an inspiration to the men under him. In this gallant act, which exemplified the high traditions of the Airborne Forces of the United States Army.
