The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Airman’s Medal to Airman First Class James F. Carney, United States Air Force, for heroism involving voluntary risk of life at Palgong San, Korea, on 1 November 1971. On that date, Airman Carney was on duty when a power generator caught fire as a result of an engine malfunction. With complete disregard for his own safety, Airman Carney, despite the hazard of burning fuel and the high probability of a violent explosion, fought and extinguished a rapidly expanding fire that engulfed a power generator and was steadily moving toward three thousand gallons of jet fuel stored in a fuel trailer. The exemplary courage and heroism displayed by Airman Carney reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
