The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Oscar E. Ladner (ASN: 14039852), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company F, 2d Battalion, 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82d Airborne Division, in action on 28 September 1944, in the vicinity of ****, Holland. Private First Class Ladner, a machine gunner, was in his company’s forward line of resistance when it was suddenly and fiercely attacked by a number of tanks and self-propelled artillery supported by infantry. Private First Class Ladner quickly engaged this superior force and exposed himself continually while bringing his fire to bear on the enemy. At the outset of this action, he received a painful bullet burn across the cheek which temporarily blinded him. Despite the acute pain Private First Class Ladner tenaciously continued to operate his gun, causing an undetermined amount of damage to the enemy. During the most critical moments of the attack, Private First Class Ladner was again wounded by shell fragments. Refusing medical aid for the second time, he kept his gun in action, unmindful of both the wounds he had suffered and the danger of his exposed position. Not only was the fire power he was able to deliver by the continued operation of his gun highly instrumental in successfully repelling the determined enemy attack, but his unsurpassed courage and devotion to duty inspired all who witnessed his actions to exert their utmost efforts in holding their positions. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
