The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Noble L. Helfer (ASN: 36480554), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters Battery, Division Artillery, 17th Airborne Division, in action against the enemy near Wesel, Germany, on 24 March 1945. With complete disregard for his own personal safety, Private First Class Helfer exposed himself to enemy fire on the landing zone to administer aid to a wounded officer. Leaving the shelter afforded by a wrecked glider, he made his way across open terrain to reach the wounded man. He administered aid but was unable to return. His supreme sacrifice was in keeping with the highest standards of military conduct.
