The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technician Fourth Grade Roland Duff (ASN: 37175953), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters Company, 2d Battalion, 507th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82d Airborne Division, in action on 6 June 1944, near ****, France. Technician Fourth Grade Duff parachuted as a member of a radar team composed of twenty men, in the vicinity of ****, with the mission of guiding our planes to the designated Drop Zone. Due to heavy enemy fire from prepared positions, only four members of the team were able to assemble, among whom was Technician Fourth Grade Duff. He took up a position in an open field and set up the radar equipment. Under constant enemy fire and with great personal danger, he remained with the machine from 0220 to 0300 hours to bring the planes in, after which he destroyed the equipment to prevent it from falling into enemy hands. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
