The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Oliver B. Carr (ASN: 0-465719), United States Army, for gallantry in action on 20 October 1944, near ****, Holland. First Lieutenant Carr, Platoon Leader, Company D, 2d Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82d Airborne Division, was given the mission of making a reconnaissance of enemy positions to determine their strength and disposition and to capture prisoners for interrogation. As the attack progressed, the Germans began throwing hand grenades from a distance of about 25 yards. Enemy 50-mm. and mortar fire fell in thick concentrations and illuminative flares brought a heavy volume of small arms grazing fire criss-crossing through the patrol sector. Two squad leaders were lost, the men becoming confused and lost direction and contact. First Lieutenant Carr personally took a position in front of the patrol, and, without regard for his own safety, led the eight remaining men well within the enemy positions to their objective. After completing the mission, First Lieutenant Carr with two men went back, located four men lost during the fire-fight and brought them safely back. Four of the enemy were killed, eight wounded, and two prisoners taken. Invaluable information was gained as to the strength, morale and dispositions of the enemy. First Lieutenant Carr’s courage, determination, and concern for his men under extremely hazardous conditions, reflects great credit on himself and the Airborne Forces of the United States Army.
